Threads transformed through knitting, weaving, looping and stitching are the most flexible of materials. Often carrying significant personal and cultural narratives, they move across temporal and spatial boundaries, connecting old and new ideas, just as they provide important links between people, places and ways of life.

Threads also have the capacity to unravel, opening up possibilities for innovation, discord and creative change. Bringing together a diverse range of contemporary textiles from the Gallery’s Australian, Asian and Pacific Collections, ‘Threads: Contemporary Textiles and the Social Fabric’ celebrates the ways in which contemporary artists explore and extend the textile medium. The Gallery formally accepted a significant 22 metre long Tongan ngatu tā’uli (black bark-cloth) in a special ceremony in Auckland on 5 September 2011.

The work was commissioned by the Queensland Art Gallery as one of several major new collection acquisitions to mark the 5th anniversary of the opening of the Gallery of Modern Art. Many works from the exhibition draw on traditional textile practices while also engaging new technologies, materials and imagery to reflect and transform existing social, political and cultural conditions. Through the visually striking designs, skilled techniques and richly textured surfaces of contemporary textiles, the exhibition investigates their function as a form of skin or interface with other cultures, the use of abstraction and rhythm to engage with local environments, the weaving of new histories and ideas of nation, and the continued vitality of garden imagery.

There hasn't been much blogging going on over the past few months as it's been a very busy time both in the studio and well.. just in life (ArtYarn is now a Mrs. ArtYarn :o) ) .

With LOTS of exciting and fun crochet work being created for a commisison in Forida, work has also been in full swing for the Manchester Science Festival; Ministry of Craft and The Tree Cozy Project in Crewe.

A recent oil spill on New Zealand’s coast has left the environment and wildlife in shambles — including the local blue penguin population. While volunteers are working hard to rescue and clean the animals in the region, they require a little bit of crafty help: tiny sweaters, or penguin pajamas, for the rescued birds. These woolen sweaters keep oil-soaked birds warm until they’re well enough to be cleaned and prevent them from ingesting oil from their feathers.

If you’re interested in donating a penguin sweater, New Zealand yarn store Skeinz has provided a handy how-to and is organizing the donation efforts.

Penguin Jumper in 8ply – Must be 100% Wool Yarn

1 pair 3.25mm , 1 pair of 3.75mm needles , 1 set of 3.25mm dpn’s or circular

Cast on 36 stitches using 3.25 needles.K1, P1 to end of row. Repeat this row 7 times. Change to 3.75mm needles and K2, P2 rib. Work 4 rows increasing at each end of every row. (44 sts)

Continue until work measures 15 cms.

Decrease 1 st at each end of every row until 28 sts remain.

Decrease 1 st. in middle of next row (27 sts.)

Leave on needle.

Make second side the same.

Transfer the 54 sts from both pieces to 3 of the set of 4 3.25mm needles.(18 sts on each.) and work a round neck in K1 P1 rib for 10 rows.

Cast off.

Stitch up sides to decreasing to 27sts (opening for flipper). Add elastic to the top and bottom to prevent the penguins getting out of them.

Top: 15cm of elastic; bottom 17 cm (knots allowed). Flat elastic okay.

Florida Commission

Over the past few weeks I have continued to crochet the 100 oranges for the Young At Art Childen's Museum in Davie, Florida.

I've been drawing up the plans ready to start work on several large nets that will house the oranges when the little one's aren't playing with them! The most exciting part of the project is getting to experiment with turning all manor of fabrics into yarns to crochet the netting with such as various clothing, denim, plastic carrier bags, old ribbon and lace, left over yarns knotted together, and lots more.

London Transport Museum invites you to join us as we transport you back in time along the Metropolitan line, through London, out into the suburbs to the beginning of Metro-land.

The Museum’s 1938 art deco Tube train and Engine No. 12, Sarah Siddons, the last operational Metropolitan Railway electric locomotive, will run as part of the Amersham Old Town’s Heritage Day between Harrow-on-the-hill, Rickmansworth and Amersham.

Metro-land best dressed Chaps and Gals

Be inspired by fashions from a bygone era, dress in your retro finest and take part in the Metro-land best dressed competition. To enter, all you have to do is embrace the vintage spirit, dress in your finest, take lots of photographs and upload your favourites from the day onto the Museum’s Flickr site http://www.flickr.com/groups/1723395@N21/ by Sunday 18 September 2011 when a panel of fashion and design historians will choose the smartest Chap and Gal of the day, winners will be contacted directly via Flickr and then revealed on Twitter.

1938 Tube train:

There will be four journeys to choose from. Journey one runs for approximately 30 minutes and tickets cost £10.00 for adults and £5.00 for children. The final journey, (journey four) runs for 1 hour 40 minutes and tickets cost £15.00 for adults and £5.00 for children. Sarah Siddons will pull carriages dating back to the 1950s and will travel on the same routes as the 1938 train and tickets for these journeys only are £5.00 for adults and kids go free (Up to three children can travel free with one paying adult ticket). Tickets allow unlimited travel on Sarah Siddons carriages subject to availability (tickets not valid on the 1938 Tube train).

A free heritage bus service will run between Amersham Old Town and Amersham station. Lace making, 1930

An excellent example of an 'industrial', a short silent film showing lace-making processes in a huge Nottingham factory with intertitles explaining the various stages of lace production. Though many of the terms will be unfamiliar to the lay viewer, it is fascinating to see the vast industrial machines producing the most delicate of lace and the teams of women finishing and mending by hand. From the design, pattern-making and punching to the final scenes of a well-to-do bride at her 'lace wedding' on a bleak, wet day in late 1920s Nottingham, this is a graphic reminder that this once great industry is as much a part of Nottingham's heritage as Robin Hood. 'Young At Art': a new commission...

The next ArtYarn commisison has come in all the way from Florida , USA.

During the next few months, I'll be crocheting away in the ArtYarn studio to create a brand new fibre artwork piece for the Young At Art Childen's Museum in Davie, Florida.

ArtYarn have been invited to create a series of textured and sensual pieces that will hang in the DreamScapes Maze, a Dada and Surrealist place! The project will speak to children about how art, in this context, uses the traditions of hand manipulated processes as versatile and contemporary artistic media. The work will be created out of recycled yarns, fabrics and an array of other rich and textured materials.

As part of this project , ArtYarn have also been asked to crochet up a rather large series of crocheted orange balls!

Tree Cozy Project, Crewe

Burnley project.

Last Friday saw the installation of a commissioned project at Sandygate Square at the Weavers Triangle in Burnley, Lancashire.

Over the past month I have been inviting the local community to learn new textile skills in knitting and crochet techniques, and to contribute to a temporary textile installation at Sandygate.

This installation pays homage to the once thriving textile industry of the area (especially in the production of cotton), and celebrates the beginning of renovation and renewal at the site.

The project was made from knitted and crocheted items that suggest the flourishing and growth of the area of the town. It encouraged the local community to engage and visit the area and to create discussions about what the area once was, and what it may become in the future.

The project was temporarily installed on one of the many stones that have been lifted out out the mill and placed into the landscape as seating areas nearby to the canal side.

ArtYarn would like to thank everyone who contributed to the project.

Fred Aldous 125th Birthday weekend!

At the moment, I'm "catching myself coming the other way" (as they say) and I have lots of great things to share with you from the past couple of weeks.

I'll start by sharing a few photos from the Fred Aldous 125th Birthday weekend which saw the top floor of Manchester's greatest art and craft store turn into a wonderful craft fair - hosted by the Manchester Craft Mafia.

Ministry of Craft held their very own taster weekend as part of the celebrations, inviting the public to take part in free taster sessions in sewing, knitting and crochet (by ArtYarn) and lino printing.

Burnley commission...

Over the past few weeks, I have been working on a commission for Burnley Council , which will be installed at Sandygate Square this coming Friday.

All the workshop sessions are now complete and I am bringing together all of the collaged knitted and crocheted piece that have been made. There will be one final session at the event 'Darn Satanics', curated and hosted by Mid Pennine Arts on Friday 22nd July 4-7pm, when you can come along and work directly onto the installation. There will also be plenty more art projects and performances to view.

Sandygate Square Burnley commission, workshop sessions.

Last week ArtYarn ran two free workshops in knitting and crochet skills for the community of Burnley.

The sessions ran at the beautiful ARTisan Tearooms on Standish St, and the groups created lots of beautiful craft works to add to the textile sculpture that will be installed in late July, just in time for the event Dark Satanics, which will be hosted by Mid Pennine Arts.

ArtYarn have just launched a new commissioned project that will see two HUGE! trees in Jubilee Gardens, Crewe (UK) get a very special make over in June 2012.

Working together with community groups of all ages in Crewe, East Cheshire, ArtYarn will be creating hundreds (and hundreds!!) of woolly patches that will be combined together to create two beautifully constructed pieces of textile art that will snuggly fit around the two trees which are located in Jubilee Gardens.

We would also like to invite knitting and crochet enthusiasts from around the world to take part in the project.

As with many ArtYarn projects, we invite all crafters to contribute to our projects. The project is open to learner and experienced crafters.

The requirements for your contributions are kept very simple and are easy to interpret in which ever way you like....

So with this we are inviting you to knit or crochet patches that measure:

12 x 12 cm - And this is the only rule we have!

The colour, texture and design of your patches is completely up to you , in fact we are looking for woolly patches that REALY stand out. We want to make an extremely bright and rich textile art work for Crewe; a project that everyone can admire and spend time exploring in the park.

When you are ready to send your completed patch, please can you make sure that you include your name and location because as always, we want to credit everyone who has contributed to the making of the project.

ArtYarn have been working away at one of the commissions for this summer.

Working with last years knitted garden (Liz Nobel's big knit project) I am reusing many of the knitted and crocheted pieces to create a new sculptural work that will be installed at Sandygate Square in Burnley.

Sandygate Square is a wonderful, historic site in Burnley, which is currently a large and significant regeneration project for the town. Working together with the community, ArtYarn hope that this installation will draw people to the site and re-discover the site.

Stitch n' Ride: on a Metrolink Tram, MCR.

This week ArtYarn and stitchers from across Greater Manchester have been knitting and crocheting on a Metrolink Tram for the Lost & Found Festival!

From Monday through to Friday we made our selves very comfortable on the Media City Tram and stitched to our hearts content.

With three pieces of knitting and one crochet piece in the making, ArtYarn and Lost & Found Festival (Contact Theater MCR) invited local crafters to stitch their bit on to the woolly creations as they transformed and grew over the week. We we're also pleased to invite the passer by to have a stitch and join in on the traveling knitting circle. It brought many a smile to passengers faces (even to the head of BBC North apparently!)

The knitting and crocheted works we're taken back to the Contact Theatre on Saturday and put on display for the finale event of the Lost & Found Festival at Contact Theatre MCR.

Thank you to the Lost & Found Festival for giving Manchester stitchers the chance to take part in their festival and to the wonderful Contact Theatre for once again supporting ArtYarn projects.

The Science Museum and Stitch London are teaming up for Stitched Science. A weekend of knitting and stitching events, encouraging experts and novices alike to get involved in a range of activities which include helping to create a giant stitched solar system.

From neurons to knitting a giant Jupiter, your skills are needed to help create this piece of art, so come down and join in! Can't stitch or knit? Don't worry! The Stitch London experts will be running a number of workshops over both days to help you master the science of stitching. Join us at the Science Museum on the 25 and 26 June and take part in Stitched Science - this event is free and there's no need to book - just drop in!

The course is ideal if you have completed our beginners course 'Knit 123', or if you already have the basics and want to progress further this course would be perfect for you.
The course covers lace knitting techniques, creating button holes. seams, 2 colour knitting plus lots, lots more.

Remember our project 'Yarn Forward' from 2009 at the Manchester Craft & Design Centre?

Together with world wide yarn crafters we made a huge covering for the handrail of the balcony and it was admired by many, many visitors for the 12 months it was installed for the UK DIY festival 2009.

Well, here is a similar project for you to take part in - an international call out for a collection of woolly strips for a great project in Auckland New Zealand.

Knitty Graffity are asking for knitted or crocheted submissions for a project that will be installed in time for the Rugby World Cup this summer.

9 countries have joined in on the project so far and they want to involve more participants from across the globe to join their huge outdoor woolly exhibition! So, join in on the action and take part, ArtYarn will be sending in their bit very soon :o)

Here is a great link for a lovely little knitted leaf pattern.. and it's completely free!!

If you have just started knitting it's a great little project to learn some new techniques and to try something a little different.

We'd love to decorate the collaborative sculpture with loads of pretty woolly leaves. You could use this pattern to knit a leaf, and try out lots of different shades of green, brown, red and even white if you wish. Then, send it along to us or bring it to the festival if you are coming along too :o)

After the success of this weekends knitting project in Salford (thanks again to everyone who took part), we have another project for you to take part in...

This is an international call out for knitted and crocheted candies and sweets for the New Mills Woolly Wander Yarn Trail , and some patches for a knitted car cosy installation.

Artyarn's services have been kindly been requested (in a consultancy role) to collaborate with the New Mills knitting group and the local community to create a yarn trail through the town which will be installed during the New Mills Festival in September 2011.

We'd really like to hear from you if you would like to contribute by sending us some woolly candies and sweeties for our installation. The installation is very relevant to the town of New Mills as it is the home of the infamous candy manufacturers Swizzles Matlow.

Today was a mammoth 'yarn bombing' day along the very windy streets of Salford, Lancashire.

ArtYarn's very own Salford based knitting club 'The Kings Arms Knitters' we're kindly invited back to the local music festival 'Sounds From The Other City' to create a woolly trail after the success of our project for the festival last year.

This years project was coordinated by member That Roger who devised a project that would not only decorate the local urban environment with flowers, leaves and beasties, but the festival goers too!

I was really pleased to be invited along to a recent tutor meeting at Ministry of Craft where I has the opportunity to meet a few more of the tutors who currently work for the company. We had a lovely lunch and all spoke a little about the courses we teach, our art and design work and activities.
Working for Ministry of Craft for the past 12 months has put me in touch with some fab artists and designers from the North West of England, and so to meet some new faces for the first time was refreshing and inspirational for everyone.

Take part in this years New Mills Festival knitting project

ArtYarn have kindly been invited to be the consultant artists for a brand new knitting and crochet project that is set to decorate the streets of New Mills, Derbyshire (UK) at the 2011 New Mills Festival.

We are inviting crafters from all over the world to take part and we would love to have all of your wonderful creations on display as part of our project at the festival.

The project is inspired by all things sweet and sugary!!

New Mills is the home of the infamous Swizzles Matlow, you know the ones - refresher bars, candy love hearts, drumstick lollies... etc etc. (ps. click on the Swizzles link, the website is incredible!!)

My recent research has taken me to investigate how I can cast pieces of knitting and crochet into more solid forms. I'm really looking forward to experimenting with making moulds and casting crocheted doilies with sculptor Karen Lyons on Monday in her studio.

Just So Festival 2011

ArtYarn are very pleased to have been invited to take part in this years amazing family friendly Just So Festival, which will take place in August :o)

After the success of last years knitting circle that was held throughout the whole weekend, this year we will be back with a new participatory project for everyone to get involved in.

We would like to invite knitters, crocheters and other textile-art enthusiasts to create wooly and fabric nature-inspired objects for our installation.

We will be displaying all of the collected artworks on a big Just So! pin cushion sculpture, that will be on display throughout the whole weekend. The sign will be used in future Just So Festival events, so we want to make it extra special!!!

Heres what we want you to make:

Using any form of knitting, crochet and embroidery onto fabric, you could make the following:

any type of flower
any type of leaf
bugs
birds
butterflies
miniature trees
miniature wild animals

We would like the art works to be as bright and bold as possible and we would love to show a range of different styles of textile art.
We have a size limit for all art work which is: no bigger than 10 cm in any direction.

You could make your art work, and decorate it from the following materials:

wool
cotton
felt fabrics
beads
embroidery materials and threads
a combination of weather proof materials.

**One thing to note: the installation will be an outdoor piece, so please take this into consideration when choosing your materials, i.e. no paper creations (unless it is made weather proof).

We have a basic diagram of how the sculpture will initially look before your artworks are added to it:

Well , I haven't been posting as much lately as I have been settling in to my new studio in Littleborough near to Rochdale. Now we are all settled (pictures coming soon), it's back down to the 'knitty gritty' (sorry) and the research, making and promoting of new projects can begin. I'll have news in the next few days of some participatory projects for you to all get your teeth into, and a few more brief updates about projects I am working at including guest tutoring at The University of Manchester and preparations for the Just So Festival 2011.

Revealed: The mystery knitter who made toys for sick children....

For a decade, she beavered away in secret, knitting dolls to cheer up sick children before delivering the toys to their homes. But all the time, the ‘mystery knitter’ kept her identity tightly under wraps. She had one rule - no-one must ever know she was behind the anonymous gifts.But now the modest pensioner’s name can be revealed after she agreed the truth could come out just days before her death.

Mary Westwell read moving tales of poorly youngsters in the local paper. She would then pick up her needles and knit little dolls for the children before asking her sons, Craig and Neil, to deliver them.

Despite being quizzed by the families, the men honoured her wishes and kept her name a closely-guarded secret.

Over the years, more than 2,000 hand-made toys were dispatched to homes in the surrounding area.

A bid to find out who was behind the knitted gifts was made 10 years ago but this drew a blank.

Mrs Westwell's granddaughter Vicky repeatedly asked her to go public amid growing speculation surrounding her identity. For a long time she refused but shortly before her death, on February 23, at 98, the pensioner, of Stubbins, in Ramsbottom, Greater Manchester, finally agreed to her granddaughter's request.

The 26-year-old, from Bury, said: 'She must have made hundreds of dolls and thousands of other items. She never did it for any kind of self-glorification. 'She wanted to let the children and their families know that there was somebody out there who cared, and hopefully to put a smile on their faces even for a moment.' A former seamstress, Mrs Westwell also knitted items for Ramsbottom Library and St Philip's Church, Chadderton, and taught sewing in primary schools. She worked at Porrits in Stubbins Vale Mill and was married to Samuel Westwell, a textiles worker, until his death in 1975.

'She made dolls for myself and all of her other grandchildren,’ Miss Westwell said.

'She even made a bride and groom for me for my wedding, which she won't be able to see.

'Even when she was older she kept at it and always wanted to help the sick children. She didn't want anything to be about her, just about the children.'

The truth comes out: Her grandson Joe, 18, and granddaughter Vicky, 26,

who repeatedly asked the pensioner to go public amid intense speculation surrounding her identity. Now they are finally telling her story

I've been busy having loads of fun this week by knitting fish to make a mobile for a baby boy's nursery. I've never knitted a fish before and here's how they turned out.

ArtYarn are so pleased to have been invited back to the Just So Festival this summer. After last years invite to run a knitting circle at the festival, which was a wonderful event for us to work at, we are stepping things up a bit this time round with a brand new participatory project that will take place in the months leading up to the festival weekens! We will soon be launching this project to all of you eager crafters -we'll need your wooly foliage!

In other news, ArtYarn have been putting together some new course materials for Ministry of Craft. One new course in particular, which we are launching this spring, is an Amigurumi crochet short course, which will be running for one afternoon in the coming months. Whilst we have been preparing the course and confirming dates, I have been busy crocheting up some samples - a cute little easter bunny and a lovely little owl.

Both patterns have been sourced from Lion Brand Yarn.

The first courses of 2011 at Ministry of Craft are about to kick off later this month, in fact my Knit 123 course will start as soon as next Wednesday!

Im also running a one off course on Saturday January 22nd where you could learn to make your self a beautiful wire knitted bracelet decorated with gorgeous beading.
